Synchronized Skating

Southern Magic
Birmingham has four synchronized skating teams known as Southern Magic. The nearly 50 team members range in age from 4 to 14, are BFSC members, and represent several communities in the Birmingham area. The teams train at the Pelham Civic Complex and are coached by Michelle Badgley, Kris Hipolito and Donna Bailey.

Synchronized Skating Facts

• It's a team sport with 8 - 20 skaters on a team.
• Skaters perform a program together.
• Programs include moves like circles, blocks, lines and wheels.
• There are currently 525 synchronized skating teams consisting of over 5,000 skaters registered with U.S. Figure Skating.
• Synchronized skating teams compete on the national and world level.

Southern Magic Facts

• The program began in 2006 with 2 teams.
• Southern Magic is the only youth synchronized skating team in Alabama.
• The teams are supported by a volunteer parent organization which assists in planning and implementing activities and fundraising opportunities.

Southern Magic Training

• Skaters learn presentation, expression and how to work as a team.
• The training program includes on and off-ice conditioning.
• Skaters are required to attend all practices which are normally 45 minutes to 1.5 hours per week, depending on team level.
• Skaters are expected to maintain their individual skating skills.
